Stephen's Charleston story
Stephen P. Herchak, President Charleston Tour Association and local artist Lunch with tour delegation from Malaysia

My love for history, in general, and Travel + Leisure magazines #1 City in the World, Charleston, in particular, began as a young child when my parents brought their kids from their home in the suburbs to experience Charleston’s famous White Point Garden and Battery. I gazed out through the railings of the seawall toward the Atlantic Ocean, and three miles away there it was--Fort Sumter. Where the deadliest of all American wars began--right out there on the horizon as the ships silently glided past in and out of the harbor.

I began art lessons about that time with famous Charleston artist, Willard Hirsch, and ever since, sharing Charleston's story, either verbally or visually, has been my passion. So it should come as no surprise that my greatest moments are when I take groups to Fort Sumter and can show them not only this awe-inspiring site but reproductions of my work for sale in the gift shop there!

Still relatively recent to being a certified and licensed guide compared to many long-serving veteran guides, I've gained the confidence and respect of the true deans of the trade to have worked for them as well as serve as leader of the Charleston Tour Association. While still very new, I was flattered but taken completely by surprise to be asked to serve as their President, which I do with great humility as well as pride.

Along the way, I've learned from the best in the best and crafted walks and excursions that are uniquely Charleston and uniquely my own. I hope you'll join me!
